Dr Susan Marshall is adjunct professor of Fashion History at the FIT Fashion Institute of Technology, Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano. She lectures in Costume Design at AFOL Moda Milano as well as internationally. and works as a costume designer for Teater Asterions Hus, Copenhagen and for the prison theater PuntoZero, Milan. She is a member of the Critical Costume steering group and has contributed to journals and books in the areas of fashion and costume. Her book Insubordinate Costume: Inspiring Performance was published by Routledge in 2024. It provides readers with an overview of the costumes, designers, context and theory that have contributed to the emerging field of ‘costume as performance’. Focusing on artists and their creative approach to space, form, materials and movement, the book looks at iconic figures such as Loie Fuller, Oskar Schlemmer and Leigh Bowery, amongst contemporary examples of practitioners that are blurring disciplinary boundaries between fashion, dance, performance and theatre.
